AI Role Play

Jun 14, 2026

Hot off the press research confirms that AI role play can build your capacity for human connection.

A study just out of Stanford and Northwestern created a platform called "Lend an Ear", where participants practiced offering emotional support to an AI chatbot role-playing real personal and workplace challenges. They studied:
Nearly 1,000 participants.
Almost 34,000 messages.

What they found is that participants who received personalized AI coaching during practice improved their empathic communication...more than both the control group and those who received video-based training.

This is rehearsal, not replacement!

This is exactly the design philosophy I advocate for:
- Not AI as a source of emotional support.
- Not AI as a substitute for human connection.
But AI as a training ground. A place to build the relational muscles that bridge you back into human relationships.

OPTION ONE
Go to a chatbot to feel understood.

OPTION TWO
Use a chatbot to practice understanding others better.

The former is replacement. The latter is rehearsal.

We can design AI to make us more human and this peer-reviewed study is evidence it works.

What might the future of human connection look like if this kind of intentional, skill-building AI use became norm instead of the exception?
