Maybe This is the Wrong Question

Maybe this is the wrong question.

Or...at least...an incomplete question:

"What do human relationships offer that is unique compared to AI?"

While I champion this approach, the answer tends to sidestep a core facet of relationships...friction.

Human relationships offer:
✔️ embodiment
✔️ reciprocity
✔️ mutual lived experience
✔️ dual agency
and more!

However, one of the main features is friction (and this is not a bad thing). It's true in business and true in personal life.

Highlighting humanity's superior relational qualities in comparison to what AI offers misses the reason hundreds of millions are using AI as a...
➖ confessional
➖ therapist
➖ romantic partner
➖ advisor

...It's because there's no friction.

And you can't get the upside of relationships without navigating the "downside" of difficult conversations, extended patience, and other-centeredness.

Trying to paint human relationships as better than AI circumvents the reason people are turning to AI. It's not that they don't know how great human connection is, it's that they are under-equipped to navigate the waters to get to the good stuff.

So, let's go all-in on upskilling conflict resolution, civil debate, and compassion. This will make the beauty of human connection increasingly accessible.

AND, let's design AI as a rehearsal for relationship (building successful friction muscles), instead of a replacement for relationship.
