Which means the thing you've been doing for years, the thing you're an expert in, the thing you excel at... it's shifting.
Vocational identity is on the line. And for many, this is tethered to personal identity. So when the Ai initiative gets rolled out and a percentage of your job is now automated, it feels less like role restructuring and more like the wind got knocked out of your sails.
Shifting professional identity can be deeply unsettling - cognitively, emotionally, even relationally.
It's disorienting when the very expertise you spent decades building can suddenly become the "inefficient" way. There's a peculiar grief in being told your mastery is now the bottleneck.
