We Don't Need MORE Human Connection
Dec 18, 2025What if we don't need more human connection?
What if we need to increase our tolerance of the messy connection we already have.
AI chatbots reveal our longing for judgment-free acceptance, attentive listening, and unconditional care...all the things we wish humans provided effortlessly.
Chatbots offer an escape from the (sometimes painful) reality of human connection. They point to what's missing in our neighborhoods, clubs, and gatherings that sometimes fall short of offering the belonging we crave.
Communities are inherently messy; full of conflicting opinions, accidental offenses, and egos bumping against each other. We can't idealize them.
And while I absolutely champion finding belonging inside human communities, it doesn't solve the deeper issue.
The issue isn't about more human connection, the issue is about increasing our capacity to tolerate the distress of friction present in all connection.
