"I regretted it instantly"...they said to the chatbot after sending an AI-drafted communication.

Anthropic just published research on AI disempowerment and action distortion. It's the first large-scale analysis of how AI chatbots might steer users in harmful ways. 

Analyzing 1.5 million Claude conversations, researchers found that mild disempowerment (where AI compromises autonomous judgment) occurs roughly 1 in 50 to 1 in 70 conversations.

1. Reality distortion (when AI leads to less accurate beliefs)
2. Value judgment distortion (when users shift away from their authentic values)
3. Action distortion (when users take actions misaligned with their values)

The study also revealed "amplifying factors" like treating AI as an authority figure, forming emotional attachments, or engaging during vulnerable life moments (which is understandably when a lot of people turn to chatbots). 

Conversations about relationships and healthcare showed the highest disempowerment potential (!). 

This research is critical for building systems that truly serve users' autonomy.

We need to educate the masses on the potential risks of disempowerment

βœ… Design for Rehearsal Not Replacement
We need AI to help practice difficult conversations through role play, reflective journaling, Motivational Interviewing, and Socratic questioning (instead of giving it the steering wheel for decision-making)

βœ… Systemic Protections
Regulatory guidelines should focus specifically on youth and vulnerable populations.
